Arthur Mayo knew there was a problem.
For the past few years, Mayo had been competing as an elite-level triathlete. While traveling throughout the US and Europe for events, he kept hearing riders complain about the same problem - transporting their bikes. There was no shortage of road bike cases on the market, but the options were either too expensive, too flimsy (to provide ample protection), too bulky and/or heavy to ship via Fed-Ex or DHL or required too much bike disassembly.
As Mayo started brainstorming potential solutions for this problem, one thought kept popping into his head: rock ‘n roll. Throughout the 90’s, he’d gone on tour with Genesis, Night Ranger and The Who as a rigger, a highly skilled specialist responsible for transporting and setting up all the bands’ equipment. Part of that role included building fortified road cases to protect artists’ guitars. One night, perched at his favorite Whitefish, Montana bar, Mayo began sketching on a napkin. “I needed something you can stack, put on planes, trains, and UPS trucks,” he explains. “It would also have to be basically bulletproof just like we’d build for those guitar boxes.”
After months of product research, athlete interviews, 3D prototyping, and extensive testing, the first Vault Sports Box was borne. It’s a revolutionary marriage of innovation and design at a reasonable price point. “Elite athletes, casual riders, and basically anyone going on a biking holiday can use it,” says VSB’s founder. The reason is simple. “Is it better than anything else on the road? Absolutely.”
